A Victorian Era Dress

pic_article2

Long ago the dress was a symbol of status and dignity.
For hundreds of years the purpose of the dress was to cover certain parts of the woman’s body for reason of modesty.

These dresses were made to wear with many different underskirts to blur the figure of the woman.

The Victorian clothes designers were recognized as the original creators of this way of dressing.

Queen Victoria’s modesty and conservative ways brought hoops to the fashion to separate the dresses and skirts from the body as much as possible.

The utmost desire of the women of this era was to slim the waste as much as possible by contrast of the enormous size of the hoops. Therefore these dresses needed many meters of fabrics that only the rich people could afford.

Mid class women had to compromise less wider hoops, cheaper and less fabrics but the rules of modesty needed to be kept.

At the bottom of the page is a drawing of a day dress from the years 1852-1856 (on the secular calendar or 5612-5616) .

The dress itself is showcased in The Victoria and Albert museum in London, England.

This is a dress mad of muslin fabric with geometric patterns in white and purple.

The skirt is sewn in 3 layers one on top of the other.

The sleeves are Pagoda sleeves.

There is a decorative string on the edge and the top of the sleeves, at the opening of the neck and on the waistline.

The upper part of the dress is gathered with ruffles which are fanned open to the shoulder part.

There is a separate white muslin collar with lace which was worn on top of the neck opening of the dress.

Under the sleeves were separate white muslin under sleeves that were connected separately and could be changed if so desired.

The dress was worn together with a light corset.

Under the dress there were a few layers of starched underskirts to stabilize the dress.

In the Bethnal Green Museum there is a similar dress with recommendation that this should be one of the patterns to be produced in our days as well.
