To continueMoritz Oppenheim is known primarily for the series of paintings in which he depicted tradional Jewish life. It was on account of these, the fruit of his mature years, that he was praised as the first Jewish painter. Over the years this image has overshadowed the fact fact that Oppenheim had already produced an extensive oeuvre before turning his foremost, although never exclusive, interest to Jewish subjects which became the source of his widespread popularity in Jewish circles.
The main effort of Oppenheim’s last twenty years was devoted to the series “Jewish Family Life” from the years 1862-1882 (secular years).
